Sponge in the Spotlight

July 22, 2009

10 years ago, in 1999, a great figure of oceanic life emerged from the depths of Bikini Bottom and onto our television screens and his name was Spongebob Squarepants. Now, Spongebob Squarepants and his friends – Sandy being my favorite – are now among the esoteric few cartoon characters which are international house hold names.

Being a 90’s baby, SpongeBob was a memorable part of Saturday Mornings and weekday afternoons. I followed his adventures and began to know his friends. From Squidward – the disgruntled, cynical employee with a perceived and outright imaginary talent for the clarinet to Sandy – a tough, Texan (feminist) squirrel who – although being a land mammal – somehow miraculously survives with her head in a fish bowl.

In celebration of this, the August 2009 edition of I-D magazine contains a spectacular “fashion” spread of SpongeBob entitled “Wet and Wild” – it is definitely as good as it sounds.
